Wordpress plugin: Guest Blogger
Aug 24th, 2009 by Bob King
A recent change to EzineArticles search result page caused Guest Blogger not being able to find any related articles. Please upgrade to version 1.5.x. Nov. 2nd, 2010.
When you’re going to be on vacation, or you’re simply out of your wits on a certain subject that you know your readers are expecting, you may want to invite an expert guest blogger.
Guest Blogger plugin helps you by simplifying the process of finding a guest blogger, searching for an interesting post and creating a guest account.
The plugin searches the well respected EzineArticles database in relevant subjects and creates a draft so that you can put in your editorial before posting.
You can choose to auto-create a guest blogger account in your Wordpress blog with the original author’s details. The guest blogger role is controlled by Wordpress “New User Default Role” (under “General Settings”, normally set to “Subscriber”).
When searching for a guest post, you can specify the keywords of the desired subject. Searching criteria can be refined with
- Matching criteria: exact match, broad match, or match any words.
- Fields to be searched: in article title, body, author name, or keyword.
- Category: all category, category or sub-category.
These criteria narrows down the most relevant potential guest posts.
The plugin also support compliance checking with EzineArticles’ Terms of Service, i.e. you cannot quote more than 25 articles per year, by keeping a counter of quoted posts and suspending searching in case of exceeding the limit.
Download:
Guest Blogger is free and licensed under GPLv3. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html
You can download the latest version here.

i get Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error. Guest Blogger requires PHP 5 and cURL to work. when i try to activate the plugin. i am running the latest version of wordpress. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Ben,
The plugin does require PHP 5 and Curl. Most hosting company support both Php5 and 4 for free. You just need to choose the right package. Php4 is being phased out. So the upgrade will help you run other plugins.

Ben,
I think the code is largely backward compatible to php version 4.0.6, still with cURL support. I change the version checking in version 1.3.2. Please give a try and let me know how it goes.

Guy,
Firstly, you can try to check if there’s any article that matches your keywords. To do so, you can click on “Check Article” on your task row.
Secondly, by its nature, the wp-cron doesn’t fire on time, but by visitors. So you can force it to post the article right away, by clicking “Post Now” along the same task row.
If this still doesn’t work, it must be a bug. Please let me know.

It could be missing cURL installation, or hosting company block out-going HTTP. Let me at the cURL testing and you can try it again.

Hi Bob, I am happy to inform you that now the plugin works and it’s so cool… thanks again.
If you plan on having a new version anytime soon, here’s a feature for your consideration – ability to filter articles by original publish date. Most of the articles i got on my keywords were from 2005-6 and are no longer relevant. it’d be awesome if you could make it happen. Thanks, Guy

Hey Bob,
I did update and passed the php checks but still having the same issue. Everything goes as it should until I “post” the articles (10) as drafts or published and it refreshes in about 3 seconds or so with no new articles. Like I said in the previous comment it is working on other HG servers I use. BTW I did check my error log and it does not show any errors for the domain I am trying to post to.
Thanks for your efforts. I am using this successfully on many of my blogs and hope to use it more soon

G’Day Bob,
I like, I have this set up and running but am only using draft mode right now as I have had GuestBlogger pull up the same article 4 times in a row. I am trying settings further apart than 1 day to see if that improves the situation.
The ability to order posts by popularity, oldest, youngest, most viewed, least viewed, author etc. would be useful. Not essential but certainly useful.

When i installed the plug, as you know it runs a test to make sure you have all you need server side for the plug to work properly and it passed all the setup requirements.
When i did a test run, i did check to make sure that the keywords i used had some articles to bring over to my site, so no problem there. Ive tried different keywords, like inspirational, which producers a list of articles more than 5 pages worth, so not stuck for choice. Ive tried it on auto creating on author, even post as admin, ive tried it on draft, and on publish. Ive tried picking up articles from 1 to 50 per run, i wont be doing 50 again though on auto creating as it didnt publish any articles, but made 50 members all at once, must have scared my HG server and alerted something, because it shut my site down for 15mins probably thinking it was an injection attack or something “blah” LOL.
Ive really tried every option there is with the same results. The article writers become members but it doesnt bring the articles with them.
Regards
Steve

Hi Bob.
I’ve just installed your Guest Blogger.
I’ve 2 question/comment:
1) It’s set to Auto create Author info – but all created with my admin email.
2) How do I invite an expert guest blogger?
Thanks

You invite expert bloggers by using their articles. Those articles are authorized to be used on your blog, as long as no changes are made. See EzineArticles.com’s Term and conditions.

I’m think I’m asking the same question as Fred. Can I change the email address of the auto created users without worry that the plugin will create them again? Can in a future update can the plugin create unique email addresses. The php is pretty easy for that… just add the created nickname to the admin email… like nickname.admin@mysite.com or nicknameadmin@mysite.com

Hi Bob. So if you’re saying that “Invite a guest blogger” means “coping” an article from EzineArticles website into my blog (which is what this plug-in does), then there is no “Invite a guest blogger” feature. Invite a guest blogger to me is, when I can invite someone as a “Guest Blogger” to write a blog/post –most likely a unique content-.
Forgive me for saying, but then this is an Article display plugin – which is obviously not a unique content -, but a copy of an existing article from another site. Or we just differ in the term of “Guest Blogger”. So, then I either misunderstood your plugin and its features or it somewhat misleading as it described.
Am I wrong?
Thanks. Fred

Your understanding is correct.
If you like, the author of the articles have put their work at EzineArticles.com and want to be “invited as a guest blogger”. Most people put in an editorial before publish, which makes it unique.
If you dont’ agree with this interpretation, I would have to create a guest blogger (ghost blogger) market place to satisfy your needs.

Ya know.. this obsession about the 25 article restriction is kind of silly. BoB fulfilled the Ezinearticles TOS by providing the option to limit to 25 but it’s silly to be worried about this. Keep the author links and your good. Do you think the ezinearticle authors don’t want their articles on all of these sites? Of course they do! The 25 article limit doesn’t benefit them. The limit is solely for the benefit of the ezinearticles WEBSITE. So my advice is to not be a pollyanna and go build your business.

Hi, I am trying the guest blogger and it does find articles for me though it doesn’t allow me to ‘choose’ one. However, it will not post. Checked my error log files and see nothing. Also tried on another blog I maintain with same host, Arvixe, same exact results. It finds content but will not post. Any suggestions?

Thats interesting Bob because I use Hostgator and don’t have that issue. Actually its a 5 cpanel account with seohosting.com which is owned and operated by Hostgator (the seohosting.com account allows me to change IP Addresses between cpanels). Why do you think EZA might block them and not another?

Hello,
Then it is possible your script is configured incorrectly. The error you provided me was this:
Last operation status: Search failed. The returned content as follows.
cURL error: 22 Message: The requested URL returned error: 403
According to the plug-in author – ” Error 403 means Forbidden. So your
server’s IP address is in the block list of EzineArticle.com
Please notice our usage of Ezinearticle.com, not Ezinearticles.com

Apparently, I will have to give up on ‘guest blogger’ see response from Arvixe below since ezine doesn’t seem to like them or curl requests
Hello,
They have instituted this block on their end. In order to have it removed, you would have to contact them. Most likely, they are blocking cURL requests.

There seems to be an issue, at least with WP 3.0
Posting works (as in article is posted) but it ends with an error:
Warning: mysql_real_escape_string() expects parameter 1 to be string, object given in /home/site/public_html/mydomain.com/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 785
That is causing the article to be posted with no author (plugin is set to generate author).
Any fix?

I use hostgator as well and have attempted do use this product in various ways and it seems that I am getting this error regardless of the number of articles that it is set up for and regardless of the day expansion. I have sat and watched it perform and it seems to always come back to the same cURL error. As a technical programmer, project manager, and UNIX coder, it would seem to me the coding is now stuck into some sort of critical loop and it has nothing to do with what Ezine Articles can or cannot correct. It has to come from within the actual code itself. I have not been able to sit and actually look at the code due to my own PhD studies. Until this coding issue is resolved, the script will be removed. I do hope you can find the answer as the script does show promise in how it operates.

I did not say the error was not real. My point was, a server code is built to maintain operations, period. Programmers and software developers must take that into consideration as they are at the will of the server operation, not the other way around.

Have tried it on a new dedicated server account with a clean IP address and it still gives cURL error: 22 Message: The requested URL returned error: 403
It does appear a coding issue and not something ezine articles is doing.

So I love the ‘idea’ of the plug-in but the plug-in is not showing me the love. I followed the instructions (and all the php tests passed inclduing a ’self’ test) then I checked the APT (active posting tasks) and it shows them (the tasks) there – ready to go to draft – I’ve checked the ‘check articles’ link and there are pages available. But nothing is showing up in my drafts/publish. Is it something I am missing?

Hello Bob – great plugin!
How does the counter work?
I want to comply with the ToS. If I set disable counting to No will the plugin just stop after 25 posts and require manual intervention?
If I set the plugin to post every 14 days, I should not exceed the 25 limit per year, so will I have to set Disable Counting Articles to Yes to avoid having to login and reset after one year?
Thanks again – looks great!!

The counter is dumb, counting only the number of articles, never reset itself. I’ll consider this feature in the future, e.g. auto reset on Jan 1st.
If you post once per two weeks, you can simply disable the counter

I ran the self test and everything is fine. Checked for matches: I got thousands of articles matching my keywords. Tried to force posting right away… Nothing happens. I got 5 blogs myself and my husband has a couple more and we are really wanting some help around here!

Please integrate Google Translation into Guest Blogger, so when a new article is posted i can be translated… like from english – to – spanish.
It would be a major upgrade and func if you can do this.

Hi, I have installed this plugin but unfortunately it is not working as it should be! After a few posts it stopped posting and I am getting error message when I manually try to post. Secondly it has not created any Author although I have selected Auto Creating Authors!
For your information, my WordPress is 3.0.5 and Guest Blogger Version is 1.5.2 (latest).
Any suggestion to correct this will be appreciated.

I saw your FAQ regarding this error message — sorry for the uninformed post. However, since I am on shared hosting and have no control over that — is there anything I can do? Is there a work-around?
I just installed the plugin, so unless the problem is at the Ezinearticles.com end it’s not my website from the shared IP that’s pinging them too much.

I got 2 questions…
1. I installed the plugin and when i try to go to the configuration page, i get 500 internal server error. Could you tell me what could be wrong? Other admin pages & site works fine.
2. Is there any implications on the new google search algorithms affecting content farms?
thanks!

For 1, you should look at your Apache error log to find out why. It may have nothing to do with Guest Blogger.
For 2, are you building a content farm? how are you building it, e.g. on the same hosting account or many accouts?

Bob – Thanks for continuing to support this awesome plugin! Very much appreciate it, I admit I used it fairly extensively this past month. When it recently broke (2 weeks ago?) I was disappointed but it’s great to see you still supporting it and providing a new version. Thanks!
Incidentally, any possible chance you’ll add proxy support in a future version? If not I understand, but thought I’d ask

Hi Bob,
Your plugin isn’t grabbing any articles on 3 different sites I just installed it on. I’ve used it in the past for other blogs and it always worked great. I’m using the latest version of Guest Blogger and WP.
Just so you know… I wouldn’t be opposed to paying something for this plugin to ensure your continued support.
Thanks

I think I’ll have to join the club as well. I’m getting exactly the same message. Would you mind explaining what needs to be changed within the plugin, so whenever the plugin stops working, we can update it ourselvs, before the updated version will be available to download.
PS In general, great plugin, when it will work again. Actually this is the first time I used it, obviously can’t comment on it right now as I’ve only installed it.

Thanks for replying.
I set up Guest Blogger over a year ago to pull articles to several sites with all them being saved to Draft. Then I manually scheduled them to publish once a day. Your plugin was working perfectly then but I was done with it for so I deactivated it on those sites. So then over a year later I set it up on a few NEW sites and it hasn’t worked on any of them. Then I reactivated an older version of Guest Blogger on one of my older sites and it didn’t work. Then I updated the plugin and still no articles on the older sites.
Anyway, my point is that its unlikely EZA is blocking my IP because I had no problems a year ago and then went an entire year without using it. Also, I’ve tried using it from 3 different IP’s in the last month and still no articles. Got any other idea’s?
Thanks again.

Well I’m baaaack. I just set up Guest Blogger on a new blog with your latest version 1.54 that has the “Run Self Test” link to click. So I ran the test, and according to the results, everything appears to be working fine, but I’m still getting the same error message I mentioned before when I try to Post articles. If the results of your “Run Self Test” come out okay, then what else could be the problem?
Sorry to keep nagging you but I’m really hoping I can get your plugin to work again like it did for me last year.
Thanks again.
